Consider how many filters you are comfortable with, as well as the type of filters. In general, face masks have 2-5 layers and are designed to keep large particles and splashes out of your nose and mouth.
Some face masks will have an N95 rating. This is a rating designated by the government that means the mask can block about 95 percent of particles that are 0.3 microns in size or larger. This type of mask will generally protect you from getting particles into your lungs but does not protect against chemical vapors, gases, carbon monoxide, gasoline, asbestos, lead or low oxygen environments.
Consider how and where you will be using your mask. A washable mask with filter inserts may be a good option if you plan on using a face mask long term.
